A Note from the President

Blue APX Logo transparent.png
The board of directors has been meeting regularly during this crazy time and we continue to provide support for the Appomattox student internship program which has been successful for many years. Some of the funds that would have gone toward special community events we donated to 4 local food banks and to our public library. We've maintained our membership in the Appomattox & Farmville Chambers of Commerce, and provided contributions to the Appomattox Tourism Committee. We contributed to the Appomattox for Equality organization which produced a series of educational videos for Black History month. We continue to buy from local businesses when purchasing most goods and services. Our donations and grants are down but we're hoping 2022 will be better!

If you visited the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park between June 30th  and July 15th, you may have seen the storyboards featuring the book “The Silent Witness” by Robin Friedman. The Jamerson Library partnered with the 1865 Foundation and the National Park to bring you this historical story of Lula and her famous doll.

ASIP Exchange Program grads Summer 2022.jpg

For the past 7 years, Appomattox Court House NHP (APCO) has been involved in a partnership between the Appomattox 1865 Foundation and Appomattox County High School to run the Appomattox Student Internship Program (ASIP). Juniors and Seniors from Teacher Joe Servis' American History class, these student volunteers learn how to be a Park Guide through classroom training, virtual/field trips, and job shadowing. Each Summer, Appomattox Court House NHP, through a partnership with Appalachian Conservation Corps, employs three of these high school student interns in the Division of Education and Visitor Services. We are thrilled that five current and former ASIP interns are working in the Park this year.

The Park would like to recognize this year's interns. Jacob, who graduated last year, is returning for a second season as an ACC and will be a sophomore at the University of Lynchburg in the Fall. This is Abigail's third year working in the Park, but this year as a Education and Visitor Services Intern; she will be attending the College of William and Mary in the Fall as a sophomore. Charlie is a first year ASIP/ACC and will be a Senior at Appomattox County High School this Fall. This is Mariska's second year as a ASIP/ACC and will be a Freshman at Virginia Tech in the Fall. Harry has been volunteering/ACC with Living History and was a part of one of the first years of the ASIP (at the time was called the Exchange Program). He just graduated from Longwood University and will be attending James Madison University in the

Fall for graduate school.
